The tournament was founded in 2001 as the SAS Carolina Classic and was originally played at the Pinehurst Resort. In 2003, the tournament was moved to its current location and renamed the SAS Championship. Since its inception, the SAS Championship has been one of the most popular events on the PGA Tour Champions schedule. The field is typically made up of major champions and Ryder Cup captains, as well as many of the top players from around the world. The tournament features a $1.8 million purse, with a first-place prize of $360,000.

The SAS Championship is also notable for its charities. The tournament has raised more than $17 million for local and national charities since 2001.
